Rep. Abruzzo opposes that bill, which says “destination resort” casinos only can be placed in counties where voters have approved slot machines. So for now, Palm Beach County would be out of the running.
But if the casino bill passes, Rep. wants Palm Beach County to be able to compete for such a resort. So he has proposed a bill that would authorize a referendum to ask Palm Beach County voters if they want slot machines at the Kennel Club.
Even if the casino bill doesn’t pass, Rep. Abruzzo says slot machines at the Kennel Club would give the county an economic boost. He says that taxes on slots would bring in at least $25 million for the state and about $2 million for the county.
The local legislative delegation has agreed to support his bill.
Critics of gambling say expansion will harm existing businesses and also inflict big social costs, such as crime and prostitution.
